Google Meet Transcription Button Missing or Transcript Not Generated
If the transcription button is missing in Google Meet, you are most likely on the wrong Workspace edition, on a phone, or in a meeting whose host has not allowed it. This guide sorts the causes and shows a live transcript that runs on your own computer instead.
Google Meet's transcript is a Workspace feature with three gates: the edition of the account that hosts the meeting, the device you are on, and the host's meeting settings. A personal Google account does not have it, a phone does not show it, and a host can switch it off for everyone. When the button is missing or the transcript never arrives, one of those gates is closed. This guide tells you which one, and then shows how to transcribe a Meet call on your own computer so none of the gates matter.
Why the button is missing
- The account or edition does not include transcripts. Meet transcripts are available on specific Google Workspace editions (business, enterprise, education and some add-ons). A personal Gmail account never has them, and neither do the smallest Workspace tiers. What counts is the host's edition, not yours.
- You are on a phone or tablet. Google's help says transcripts are started from a computer. The mobile apps show captions but not the transcript control.
- The host has turned it off, or host management restricts it. Hosts can limit who may start transcripts and recordings; in a meeting with host management on, participants may see nothing at all.
- You joined from outside the organisation. External participants and guests usually cannot start transcripts; only members of the hosting organisation with the right permissions can.
- The admin has disabled it. Workspace admins can switch transcripts off for the whole domain or for organisational units.
Why the transcript was not generated
Even when transcription was on, the file sometimes does not arrive:
- The meeting was shorter than the minimum. Very short meetings may produce no transcript.
- The language was not supported or not set. Meet transcribes a fixed set of languages, and picks up the meeting language setting.
- Processing failed or is still running. The transcript is delivered to the host's Google Drive and by email, some time after the meeting; it is not instant.
- Storage or Drive policy blocked it. Drive quota and retention rules apply to the transcript document like any other file.
- Gemini notes without a transcript. Meeting notes generated by Gemini are a separate feature; getting notes does not mean a transcript was made.

Transcribe Google Meet on your own computer

Tell the other participants
A transcript running on your own device is not visible in Meet, so say that you are keeping one. Recording and transcription laws differ by country and region, and many require the consent of everyone in the conversation.
